In the 1st Century Christian Church, a "Saint" was anybody who believed in and followed the teachings of Jesus. The definition of what a saint is was changed by the Catholic Church at some later point in time. By this definition, Matthew became a saint at some time before he was called by Jesus to be a disciple.
