The Sumatran tiger is native to the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Though related to other tiger subspecies, research has shown that their genetics differ greatly from those of their mainland cousins. It is thought that at some time between 10,000 B.C.-4,000 B.C., Sumatran tigers migrated to what is now the island of Sumatra. After sometime, sea levels began to rise, stranding the tigers on the island, and cutting them off completely from other subspecies of tigers. This separation allowed them to evolve into an entirely new, isolated subspecies.
