Up to the time the coin was issued no historic woman had been featured on an American coin. Many coins had carried an image of the symbolic Miss Liberty, but only male presidents and other leaders had been depicted.
Anthony was chosen (note the spelling) because she was a major 19th century leader in the effort to allow women to vote and to gain other rights. Unfortunately the coin's design was rushed to completion and was deficient in nearly every respect. In particular it was almost identical in size to the 25c piece, and carried an especially unflattering portrait of the arguably forbidding Ms. Anthony.
Please see the Related Question for more information. However, Susan B. Anthony wasn't on the first silver dollar by any means. The first US silver dollars were issued in 1794 and featured a picture of Miss Liberty.
Anthony's picture didn't appear on a $1 coin until 1979, almost 2 centuries later, and by that time $1 coins were made of copper-nickel not silver.
She was a civil rights leader who spent 45 years traveling through the United States and Europe giving speeches to promote women's rights and seeking the right to vote for all women, and her efforts in obtaining women's right to vote were key in the decision to commemorate Susan B. Anthony on the dollar coin. However her picture hasn't been used on $1 coins since 1999.
The United States is one of the few countries that still uses paper money in such a low denomination as a dollar. Paper money lasts a relatively short time, while coins go on for many years before wearing out.
The Susan B. Anthony dollar was made to try and replace the dollar bill, but failed to gain common acceptance because
(a) the paper dollar was not withdrawn
(b) the coin was easily confused with a quarter as it had similar size and colour
In the UK the pound coin was accepted because the pound note was withdrawn and the coin was markedly different from others in circulation being thick and gold coloured
