Roosevelt ran as McKinley's running mate in 1900 and was elected to be the vice-president. He took office at the start of McKinley's second term in 1901.

He was given the opportunity to get onto the ticket because the incumbent vice president , Hobart, who was elected with McKinley in 1896 died in office.
