The land purchased by the British from the Mississaugas in 1787 was known by Europeans as Toronto (derived from the Iroquois word tkaronto, meaning "place where trees stand in the water"). In 1793 the town of York was founded on the existing settlement. York was incorporated in 1834 and reverted back to its original name of Toronto.

In 1834. It was called Toronto in the 1700s derived from the Iroquois name, but changed back to York later on when it was bought. It later changed back to Toronto in the 1834s.
