Union General Alfred Pleasonton graduated from West point in 1844. Among his class of 25 graduating cadets, he ranked 7th. Pleasonton was a participant in the Battle of Antietam in 1862. Little did he or any other soldier know that Antietam would be a historic battle. It's almost 25,000 casualties in a single day, has never been surpassed by any battle, anywhere, in future by US combat history. Pleasonton was also in charge of the Union's cavalry Corps at the Battle of Gettysburg.
Union General John Buford graduated from West Point in 1848. He was among the 38 cadets graduating that year and ranked 16th in his class. Buford was the commander of the 1st Division of the Cavalry Corps under General Alfred Pleasonton.
Union General Alfred Sully graduated from West Point in 1841. He was ranked 34th in his graduating class of 52 cadets. Sully is best known for his participation in the Peninsula campaign.
Union General David McMurtrie Gregg graduated from West Point in 1855. Among the 34 graduating cadets that year, he ranked 8th. He was to later serve in the Union cavalry. At the Battle of Gettysburg he was in charge of the 2nd Division under Cavalry Corps General Pleasonton. Gregg was assigned to take his division to Maryland and guard the rear of the Army of the Potomac.
Union General Alfred Thomas Archimedes Torbert graduated from West Point in 1855. He was was ranked 21st in his class of 34 cadets. Torbert spent his US Civil War duty in the Eastern Theater of the war. He served in the battles of South Mountain, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and in Gettysburg.
Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith was a graduate of West Point's class of 1845. He ranked 26th in his class.
Confederate General Jean Jacques Alfred Alexander Mouton graduated from West Point in 1850. He was ranked 38th in his graduating class of cadets that numbered 44. Mouton served in the Western Theater of the US Civil War. He saw action in the important Battle of Shiloh and later in the Red River Campaign.

Union General Thomas Alfred Davies graduated from West Point in 1829. He was ranked 25th among his graduating class of cadets that numbered 46. As an aside, Davies was in the same class as Confederate generals Robert E. Lee and Joseph Johnston. Davies saw service in the First Battle of Bull Run. He was then transferred to the Western Theater and took part on the Battle of Corinth and Island Number Ten.
General Philip Henry Sheridan graduated from West Point in 1853. He ranked 34th out of a class of 52.
Union General Benjamin Butler did not graduate from West Point. He did have a college education and graduated from Colby College in Maine. He also passed the bar in Massachusetts and practiced law before the US Civil War.
