General Samuel R. Curtis graduated from West Point in 1831. In his graduating class of 33, he ranked 27th. Curtis was a Mexican War veteran and gained fame in the US Civil War Battle of Pea Ridge.
Confederate General Samuel Bell Maxey graduated from West Point in 1846. Among the 59 graduating cadets in his class, Maxey was ranked 58th. General Maxey served in the Mexican War and in the US Civil War, Maxey saw most of his battle action in Texas.
Union General Samuel Davis Sturgis graduated from West Point in 1846. Among his graduating class of 59 cadets, Sturgis ranked 32nd. As an aside, Sturgis graduated with well known generals such as Stonewall Jackson and George Edward Pickett.At one point General Sturgis was in charge of the military force that protected Washington DC.
Union General Samuel Peter Heintzelman graduated from West Point in 1826. He was ranked 17th among his class of 41 graduating cadets. Heintzelman saw action at both battles of Bull Run and in the the Peninsula campaign. Later in the war he was assigned to the defense of Washington DC.
Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith was a graduate of West Point's class of 1845. He ranked 26th in his class.
Union General Samuel Sprigg Carroll graduated from West Point in 1856. He was ranked 44th among his class of graduating cadets that numbered 49. Carroll served at the the US Civil War battles of Cedar Mountain, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. He also participated in US Grant's Overland campaign in 1864.

General Philip Henry Sheridan graduated from West Point in 1853. He ranked 34th out of a class of 52.
Union General Benjamin Butler did not graduate from West Point. He did have a college education and graduated from Colby College in Maine. He also passed the bar in Massachusetts and practiced law before the US Civil War.
General Ulysses S. Grant
Confederate General Samuel Gibbs French graduated from West Point in 1843. Among the 39 graduating cadets, French ranked 14th. French was one of the few Northern Army officers who decided to fight for the South. He was born in New Jersey, but his duty in the Mexican War brought him to the Southwest. He decided owning a plantation in Mississippi. French saw mostly Western Theater battle action such as the Siege of Vicksburg.
James Longstreet held the rank of major general in the Confederate army. He graduated 54th in the West Point class of 1842.
