Union General Israel Bush Richardson graduated from West Point in 1841. His graduating class of cadets numbered 52. Richardson was ranked 38th.General Richardson saw battle action in the Peninsula campaign and at Antietam. He was mortally wounded at Antietam and died shortly thereafter. He was among the six generals that were killed or mortally wounded at the Battle of Antietam.

Union General Benjamin Butler did not graduate from West Point. He did have a college education and graduated from Colby College in Maine. He also passed the bar in Massachusetts and practiced law before the US Civil War.
