Union General John Henry Gordon graduated from West Point in 1846. He was ranked 43rd in his class of graduating cadets that numbered 59. Gordon served with honor in major battles in the Eastern Theater including the battles of Antietam and Gettysburg. Later in the war he was appointed to head the Department of Virginia. As an aside, Gordon was in the same West Point class as George B. McClellan and George Edward Pickett.
General Philip Henry Sheridan graduated from West Point in 1853. He ranked 34th out of a class of 52.
Union General Henry Hayes Lockwood graduated from West point in 1836. He was ranked 22nd among his graduating class of cadets numbering 49. He is best known for his performance at the Battle of Gettysburg.
Union General Henry Washington Benham graduated from West Point in 1837. He was ranked first in a graduating class of 50 cadets. Benham was a great engineer and worked in that capacity in the Army of the Potomac.
Union General Henry Lawrence Eustis graduated from West Point in 1842. He was ranked first in his graduating class of cadets numbering 56. Eustis served extensively in the Eastern Theater. He participated in the Battle of Gettysburg.
Union General George Gordon Meade graduated from West Point in 1835. Meade ranked 19th in a graduating class of 56 cadets. Meade is best known for his victory at the Battle of Gettysburg.
Union General William Henry French graduated from West Point in 1837. He was ranked 22nd in a graduating class of cadets that numbered 50. French's most noteworthy action in the war was his actions as a commander at the Battle of Antietam.
Union General Henry Jackson Hunt graduated from West Point in 1839. Among the 31 graduating cadets, Hunt ranked 19th. Hunt was primarily artillery officer. He is best known for his battle actions at the Battle of Gettysburg.
Confederate General John Henry Winder graduated from West Point in 1820. He was ranked eleventh among the 30 cadets graduating that year. Winder's US Civil War service was for the most part, being in charge of POW camps.
Confederate General Francis Henry Gilmer graduated from West Point in 1839. He was ranked 4th in his graduating class of cadets that numbered 31. Gilmer saw most of his battle action in the Western Theater. His most noteworthy battles were at Shiloh and in the siege of Atlanta.
Union General Henry Walton Wessells graduated from West Point in 1823. Among the 43 graduating cadets that year, Wessells was ranked 29th. Wessells served with the Army of the Potomac and participated in the Union's Peninsula campaign.
Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith was a graduate of West Point's class of 1845. He ranked 26th in his class.
Confederate General Henry Brevard Davidson graduated from West Point in 1853. He ranked 33rd among his graduating class of cadets that numbered 52. Davidson saw action in the Western Theater of the US Civil ar. He served at the battle of Chickamauga and in the defense of Atlanta.
