Confederate General William Henry Chase Whiting graduated from West Point in 1845. Among the graduating class of cadets that numbered 41, Whiting one first in his class. Also he was a brilliant student at what was to become Georgetown. There he entered at age 14, graduated in two years and was first in his class. It was after Georgetown that he enrolled at West Point. Whiting saw action at Fort Anderson then spent much time defending Fort Fisher. He was captured in early 1865 and taken prisoner. He died in a POW camp in New York just before the war ended.
