Union General Zealous Bates Tower graduated from West Point in 1841. Among his graduating class of 52 cadets, Tower ranked No. 1. He was an excellent engineer and he also served in the Second Battle of Bull Run where he was severely wounded. His fortifications in Tennessee helped defeat Confederate General Braxton Bragg.
Union General Benjamin Butler did not graduate from West Point. He did have a college education and graduated from Colby College in Maine. He also passed the bar in Massachusetts and practiced law before the US Civil War.
