After forming from lava buildups between about 25,000 and 19,000 years ago, Vesuvius apparently began having widely spaced explosive eruptions. Evidence for at least 4 large events has been uncovered from the subterranean rock layers. A likely eruption took place around 217 BC when the region was sparsely populated, preceding the famous Pompeiian eruption by about 300 years. Vesuvius has had about 30 major eruptions since 79 AD, but most since then have been much less violent. The last was in 1944.
