Either mahogany, maple or birch wood are the three main types of wood most standard and professional drums will be made of. Some cheaper value drums could be made of various cheaper types of plywood.
Drums used to be made out of wood and dries animal skins. Now they are made from metal, plastics and the "skin" is synthetic or man made. Many snare drums are made from wood. Maple and birch are the most common woods. Yamaha has an oak snare that's good. The heads on a snare are, today, almost always made of mylar. You can get heads made from animal skin, but most drummers play mylar. As for the snares...some snares are made from (synthetic) gut, but most are made of wire.

Your elm tree could be producing sap because it was mixed with a maple tree. I know that our elm tree produces sap on a regular basis but my research has shown that it's a mix with a maple tree.
they're quite good actually.nowadays there are different degrees of quality amongst that particular model. avoid any drums made of "hardwood". quality drums are made from Birch or Maple. older 80's exports are good sets.all you need is some good heads. Maple and birch ARE hardwood! It really depends what sound you want. I use a Pearl forum kit with poplar for both live and recording and love it.My brother uses a dW maple kit and loves it.The secrete is in the proper tuning and finding the best heads to get the sound you want. Also how the shell is made makes a big difference. But the wood type is all in the ear of the beholder. BTW Export drums are very good quality and durable.
