December 11, 1941 (World War II)
Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and other US possessions on December 7, 1941. On December 8, before a joint session of congress Franklin Roosevelt stated: A state of war exists between the US a Japan. On December 11 Japan's allies (Germany and Italy) declared war on the U.S. The US immediately responded by reciprocating the declaration of war.
President Woodrow Wilson asked congress to declare war on Germany on April 2nd, 1917- WW1. Congress then declared war on April 6, 1917, with a 82-6 vote in Senate and 373-50 vote in the House.

Japan staged its sneak attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Four days later, on December 11, in response to a realignment of the Tri-Partite (Axis) Pact, and as a sop to German Admiral Doenitz, who wanted unrestricted submarine warfare against Allied shipping in the Atlantic, Hitler declared war on the United States. Within hours, the U.S. Congress unanimously answered with a resolution declaring war against Germany.
1917
Declaring war on the USA after Japan declared war on America. Germany declared war on America hoping Japan would declare war on Russia. Since Japan did not declare war on Russia (Russia would later declare war on Japan), Germany did not have to declare on America. If Germany had not declared war on the USA, America would have difficulty in declaring war on Germany (although USA and Germany naval vessels in the North Atlantic were shooting at one another in 1941). If Germany had not declared war on the USA, then Hitler would not have had to face the military men and equipment of America. Although Russia fought the majority of land battles against Germany, it was American men and equipment that helped Russia and Britain and other Allied nations to defeat Germany.
