This was after the initial collapse of the Roman Empire. The Empire got too big and couldn't sustain itself as it was weak on the inside but strong on the oustide. This became a problem as the game 'Rome Total War: Barbarian Invasion' demonstrates as all these hoards of Barbarians, namely Huns and Goths came storming through Europe and rapidly destroyed the already weakened Roman Armies. They were already weakened because of the lack of money in the Empire. These Barbarians almost destroyed the 'Western Empire' and sacked Rome in about 470a.d. This then lead to the 'splitting of the Empire' and over a few hundred years, the Eastern Empire became more and more Christian with the holy city of Constantinople at the heart of the Christianity. This empire actually survived until about the 1400's. This was not the same for the Western Empire that crumbled almost immediately. The Emperor Constantine was Roman Empire from 306, and the sole holder of that office from 324 until his death in 337.

Hope This Helps
