In 1584 and 1585 two expeditions were sent to Roanoke Island, in what is now North Carolina. They were of a military nature, sponsored and organized by Sir Walter Ralegh. In 1587 another expedition was sent and they too landed at Roanoke Island although they were supposed to go to the Chesapeake. This voyage consisted of men, women and boys. The colonists were unsuccessful and disappeared. Their fate is unknown. In 1607, during the reign of King James, another colony was sent to Virginia and the Jamestown colony was established. This was the first permanent and ultimately successful settlement in what is now the USA.
