Cotton seeds were brought to Australia with the First Fleet, which arrived on 26 January 1788. This was initially grown just as an ornamental plant, as the conditions around Port Jackson weren't suitable for creating an entire cotton crop. However, it became more popular as settlement spread to the drier inland, and by 1830, the first shipment of Australian-grown cotton - three whole bags - was exported to England.
