Never. Gordon Cooper flew abard Faith 7, the final Mercury flight on May 15, 1963. On August 21, 1965, Cooper commanded Gemini 5 to a space endurance record of 8 days. Cooper's co-pilot on Gemini 5 was Pete Conrad who landed on the moon during Apollo 12. Gemini 5 flew 8 days because that was the minimun time it would take men to fly from the earth to the moon and back.
Cooper was considered a hot shot be his superiors. He served on several back up crews, but was never promoted to flight crew after his Gemini 5 flight. He was in line to fly to the moon aboard Apollo 14, but was bumped off the flight by Alan Shepard, the first American in space. Cooper resigned from NASA following Shepard's assignment to Apollo 14.
