Although Australia began as a British prison settlement, the fact that it was a young, free continent with no major religious or political prejudices was enough to encourage people from a variety of other countries to settle here. Germans and Prussians sought to escape the religious persecution in Germany in the 1840s. The Irish sought a better lifestyle after the potato famine wiped out their livelihood. Many other came because they saw opportunities in Australia that were simply unavailable to them elsewhere. True multiculturalism, that is, the bringing together of a number of diverse races within one country, arguably began with the goldrushes. All of a sudden, people from all cultures - including the Chinese - joined the influx to Australia, often coming in groups large enough to exert a cultural influence on the rest of society.
