Technically, there will have been men and women riding horses before it was even recorded. They would not have had saddles or posh bits and bridles but they would have just run up to today's equivalent of a horse and jump on using just the mane for reigns.
The first proper riders would have been rich men on hunts and the women would have to ride side saddle.
