Loosely utilizing the focus of time, it could be easily argued that a lack of creativity caused a wide variety of world cultures to severely deplete the pool of personal, or given, names. However, on at least one other hand, they perhaps valued familial connectivity, and therefore honored that- with surnames.
Women have been taking men's names since as long as there were names to take. When women were seen more as property than people, a man would want her to take his name to further tie her to him and ever since it's been a cultural tradition. In fact, in 1857 when Lucy Stone kept her maiden name this was seen as revolutionary and furthered the women's right movement.
Native American tribes made up their last names based on where they lived and what they did and stuff like that.
I believe last names originated during the Zhou Dynasty but I'm not totally sure.
