The plague or Black Death was a disease of rodents and was transmitted from rat to humans by the bites of infected fleas and most people who got infected died. It was also spread to some people by direct inhalation of victim's breath or by infected droplets caused by somebody coughing or sneezing.

The Black Death plague reached its peak in 1348-49.It had originated in China and was carried to Europe by Italian merchants who besieged the Tatars in the Crimea.

and then spread all over Europe. There were 25 million deaths in Europe from this plague.

In England it was first recognised in Weymouth in August 1348 and before waning in the winter of 1349, it caused the death a third of the total population of England. Following the 1349 pandemic, there were further outbreaks of the disease ranging from restricted episodes in major cities like London in 1433 to widespread epidemics in 1361, 1368, 1375, 1390 and 1406.
