There were people that sold themselves into slavery here in the U.S. in Mass. back in the 1600's. Slavery is has always been frowned upon but there are political reasons to consider it. Such as after being attacked a country might take all the males from 16 years and up as slaves so as to divert any near future attack. It is as old as civilization.

Why did settlements start using slaves?

Settlements started using slaves to give Africans a better life. Many Africans at the time lived under brutal warlords, who would often sacrifice people to the gods. The Europeans were appalled at this practice, so they took as many Africans as they could to the New World with them. The Europeans soon realized that they could not afford to continue feeding the Africans, and the Africans did not understand European culture enough to feed themselves. So the European's met with the peaceful tribal leaders of the Africans, and together the decided that a system of servitude for food, clothing, and housing for labor would be fair. Contrary to propaganda spread during the American Civil War, most "slaves" (as the northerner's called them) were very content with their lives, and were upset by the outcome of the Civil War.

How did the 12 bar blues start?

It started when the Africans were sold as slaves to America. The Africans brought their syncopated rhythm from Africa and combined this syncopation with words to produce work songs. As the slaves worked, they sung these songs. In these work songs, the Africans used a concept called call and repeat, the foundation of the twelve bar blues. Eventually, the work songs evolved into what we call the twelve bar blues.
