The idea of the Statue of Liberty was started in the early 1870's. The artist did not actually start on the statue until 1875. The Statue of Liberty was finished in 1885 and erected in 1886 in New York Harbor. The entire statue is made of copper and weighs 62,000 pounds not including the base.

France didn't build the statue of liberty until they got to the USA because they had to ship pieces of the statue on different boats because of the weight and size of the statue; if they had built the whole statue and put it on one boat the boat would have sunk.
