Edmund Ross, a Senator from Kansas, voted not to convict President Andrew Johnson. He was one of seven Republicans who broke with the Republican ranks to vote against conviction. Ross's vote was the last of the seven, so his vote is credited with saving Johnson's presidency. Ross was never elected to public office again because of his vote.
