Syd Barrett definitely didn't "overdose" on LSD. He did fry his brain with heavy use of it, though. Pink Floyd makes numerous references to his mental state, which dwindled away over time. References to him by the band include "Brain Damage" and "Eclipse" on Dark Side of the Moon and "Wish You Were Here" on Wish You Were Here.
At the end of his time with the band, he showed up at the studio while Pink Floyd was recording an album. He didn't "seem all there" and made casual conversation. He left without saying goodbye to anyone.
He made two solo albums right after leaving Pink Floyd; after that, he lived a reclusive life. He died of pancreatic cancer in 2006.

No he didn't, he used LSD (Acid) as back in the late Sixties they thought that the drug helped you explore your mind and soul (which is false, it just turned him insane due to overdose) and he may have used Cannabis, but nothing heavier than those two.
