The battle of Dunkerque occurred from may 25th to 3rd of June 1940.
The French and British Army tried to advance through Belgium to slow down the German advance.
But the breakthrough Sedan of the German 4th Panzer division to Lille (the central front) obliged the Allies Army to withdraw north to Dunkerque. Taken in the Stranglehold between the 4th PD marching North and the 6th PD going West, the only alternative was the evacuation by sea.
The french heroic defense on the ground (35000 soldiers were captured) struggling 1 against 4, the incredible breathless fighting of the RAF in the air, and the heroic audacity at sea of british sailors allowed the evacuation, in unheard conditions. About 350 000 british and French succeded in boarding in boats under the bombing of the German Lutfwaffe.
11 000 allies soldiers and 20 000 German soldiers were killed during the Dynamo Operation, about 40 000 french were captured.
The British were able to evacuate their army so that it could fight again in later engagements during the war.
