this is a highly disputed question and there is no clear answer, as war was never actually declared between the two superpowers. the generally accepted "start" of the cold war, however, was after WWII (ending in 1945), when Germany, Berlin, and Indochina were all divided into four parts and occupied by the victorious countries of the previous war. it is considered to have ended in 1991, when communism fell in the Soviet Union.
