The Interstate Commerce Act of 1887 authorized the Federal government to investigate interstate violations of law. To that end, the Justice Department under Attorney General Charles Joseph Bonaparte sought to recruit investigators in 1906, and established the "Bureau of Investigation" in 1908. This was renamed in 1932 as "The United States Bureau of Investigation" and in 1933 the "Division of Investigation" under the Bureau of Prohibition. It gained its modern name in 1935. Initially acting against "white slavery" (the Mann Act) and "prohibition", the FBI began its war against bank robbers and other criminals during the 1930's, establishing a forensic branch called the "Scientific Crime Detection Laboratory".
