The internet was invented in 1969 by ARPANET. The World Wide Web was invented in 1989. The first website was launched in 1990. But during all of that, most people didn't know about the internet.

The internet became well known with the launch of Windows 95 in 1995, but most people didn't get it in their homes until 1997 and 1998. In fact, the percent of households with internet access only reached 50 percent in 2000! Some people didn't see any usefulness in the internet or simply didn't want to pay the high prices. Remember that there was no YouTube, Facebook, or even Google in the earliest days of the internet.

Also keep in mind that home computers didn't become popular themselves until around 1995. Windows 95 was the first highly anticipated product-- before then, many products just faded into popularity. Today, nearly every product is launched with a bang.

The Internet (as it's known today) was started as a project by the Department of Defense.

The idea was to have a "loop" around the United States, so that if one portion of the loop got destroyed (say, by a missile) the communication could continue around the unbroken part of the loop.

The loop would connect military bases and research facilities (and some colleges).

When we started the space program and started putting satellites into orbit, the government realized that satellite communications between the military bases would be harder to "knock out", and didn't require physical wire, so they abandoned the project and let the universities that were connected to it use it.

This happened about the same time that the Unix operating system was invented by Bell Labs. Unix was given to the universities to use on their computers (Remember, computers were custom built in those days, and there were many different configurations). Anyway, Unix was special in a couple of ways; first, it would run on all the different hardware that the universities had; and second it used a standardized communications protocol called TCP/IP, which allowed computers that normally wouldn't communicate with each other to share information.

TCP/IP, which stands for "Transmission Control Protocol/Internetworking Protocol" is where the term "Internet" came from.

As the Internet grew, people started realizing that they could access the data at the universities, if they could connect to the system. This afforded a wealth of knowledge that that people could access in the databanks of the universities. Other smaller colleges also saw this opportunity to access large research databases, and started getting online as well.

The Internet is certainly not what it used to be; it has evolved over the years, and still uses a de-centralized structure, and still uses TCP/IP to communicate.
