Answer

In 1962 11,000 American troops entered.

Answer

America became involved in Veitnam after WWII. Ho chi Min worked for the American OSS during WWII and begged the Americans not to let the French regain the Vietnamese territory take by the Japanese during WWII.

America got involved in the war in the late 50's as the Vietnamese people were determined not to be subjected to the torturous rule of the French and in particular the Surte, French secret police - real nasty people who blew up the Rainbow Warrior while she sat in the port of a neutral country - New Zealand, New York

France's treatment of the Vietnamese people was far far worst than the atrocities carried out by the Viettcong.

In September of 1959 the US gave France 10 million dollars worth of WWII war surplus material for use in Indochina under the Lend-Lease Program.

During the Eisenhower administration the Military Assistance Advisory Group (Indochina) was established in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos and by June of 1955 a total of 740 US Advisors were on duty with South Vietnamese units. The CIA and their surrogate Air Force called Air America were actively helping the French.

The UN fought in Korea; not Vietnam.
