The main event that ignited the First World War was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary by Serbian Black Hand Gang on 28 June 1914.
June 28, 1914. He and his wife were riding through Sarajevo in an open car and a few Black Hand Conspirators attempted to throw a bomb at the open car the missed and hit an officer in another car. Francis Ferdinand was on his way to go see the officer in the hospital unknowing that another conspirator was waiting for him to pass, they threw a bomb into his car and the bomb killed both Francis and his wife. This assassination was the primary cause of World War 1.

When you look at the war as a whole there were numerous long term causes such as the militarism, building alliances and imperialism of the major European powers of the time. So the was waiting to happen and the assassination of Franz Ferdinand was just the spark that ignited the fire, the war probably would have happened without the assassination but the assassination would not be as well known had it not started the war.
