On the 24th of June 1314. Stirling castle was being besieged by the Scots army under Edward Bruce, King Robert's brother. The commander of the English garisson, Sir Philip Mowbray, agreed with Bruce that if the castle wasn't relieved by mid summer he would surrender to the Scots.

The English king, Edward II, marched north with an army and met the Scots under King Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn a little to the south of Stirling.

Bruce, though greatly outnumbered, gained a great victory.
