The Americas were in fact discovered by the Vikings long before any English, Italian or Spanish explorers got there. But obviously, America was already inhabited by the Native Americans, so obviously early man had made his way to America even before that. Nonetheless, those European explorers you're thinking of DID discover America, they just weren't the first to do so.
