For all practical purposes, the Great Depression began on Tuesday, October 29, 1929. This is usually considered the actual beginning of the Great Depression because of the disastrous effect on the national economy. The huge losses in stocks and bonds forced many companies out of business. This caused job losses. Then banks began to fail. All of is linked back to the 1929 Stock Market crash.

Yes, the stock market crash did begin the great depression but it wasn't the only cause. The depression was also due to the tariffs/war debt policies, factories producing more than consumers demanded, farm sector crisis, easy credit, and unequal distribution of income. The stock market crash just tipped it all off.
