Mount Giluwe is the highest volcano in Papua New Guinea. An old shield volcano which has been inactive for thousands of years, it is 4,368 metres high.Papua New Guinea's highest active volcano is Mount Ulawun, with an elevation of 2334 m. It showed all the signs of erupting in June 2010, but it did not actually erupt. Its most significant recent eruption was in 1980.

Volcanic eruptions happen, somewhere on the planet, every day. Check the website of the US Geological Survey for the latest information. There are currently volcanic eruptions in Italy, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Mexico, and Chile, among others. They are likely to cause minimal destruction, if any.
Ulawun in Papua, New Guinea has been nearly constantly active for the past decade. Volanologist estimate that this single volcano is responsible for about 2% of the sulfur dioxide released into the atmosphere.
During World War II, or indeed any time frame of the last 100 years, Papua New Guinea is very wet, and very humid. It is a tropical island, and during monsoon season it gets a massive amount to rain, usually between December and March. The 'dry' season is June to September, but with the humidity levels so high, it never really is dry there.
All other positions of defence between Australia and Japan had already fallen. This included Singapore and the Malay Peninsula. Essentially, Papua New Guinea was seen as the last bastion of defence between Australia and a Japanese invasion. If Japan took control of Port Moresby, in the south, it was regarded that it would be very easy for them to launch both air and sea attacks on Australia.
