We can never know the answer to that question without the aid of a time machine - and when they crossed the Beringia land bridge they had not yet become Mayas. Nobody was around to record the event - which is exactly what "prehistory" means.

None of the tribes were are familiar with were formed at that remote and distant time, perhaps more than 20,000 years ago - it was the ancestors of the Lakota, the Kayapo, the Cree, the Jivaro, the Incas and the Maya who crossed into the lands that became the Americas.

Most of the animals started to cross the bridge and wherever animals went Native Americans followed for food. So they crossed the bridge and came to North America. A couple thousand years later the ocean water level increased and the bridge was hidden once again.
