Rome started acquiring territory soon after its foundation by Romulus in 753 BC. She seized the nearby Latin cities of Antemnae and Caenina in 752 BC. For the next 400 years Rome's expansion was mainly into the surrounding area of Latium (land of the Latins) apart form the conquest of the neighbouring Etruscan city of Veii in 396 BC. She annexed the territories of the Volsci who lived to the south, in 358 BC. Rome's expansion in central and southern Italy occurred in the second half of the 4th century BC and the early 3rd century BC. Rome acquired Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica after the end of the First Punic War (264-241 BC) against the Carthaginians. The expansion beyond Italy started in 206 BC when Rome defeated the Carthaginians in southern Spain in 206 BC and took over the Carthaginian territories in Spain during the Second Punic War (218-201 BC)
