The most commonly used dates for the Middle Ages are 476 to 1453, though many other dates are also used.

The Viking Age, during which Viking voyages were carried out, happened during the late 8th through 11th centuries. We might use the dates 793 to 1066 for the Viking Age.

Historians refer to an Age of Vikings, with dates from about 790 AD to the middle of the thirteenth century, about 1250 or 1260, depending on region.

The Anglo saxon Historian Bede recorded the presence of a Roman garrison on the Orkney Islands, which was there to deal with pirates who raided from the North Sea. If that is true (a lot of Bede's writings are ignored by historians) then the ancestors of the later Vikings had been around for quite a while.

The earlier date is for a Viking raid in Britain is 787, but the earliest really important date is 793, when Vikings destroyed the monastery on Lindisfarne, near the present day border between England and Scotland.

The voyages were pirate raids in some areas, but were mercantile in others, and their European voyages extended across virtually the entire continent. Some Viking groups were invited to stay in some areas to defend against other Viking groups, most notably when Charles the Simple of France gave the Dukedom of Normandy to the Viking Rollo. Vikings were eventually assimilated into local culture, and their superiority of maritime technology was lost in later years with developments from other parts of Europe.

What part of the Middle Ages were the Viking voyages in?

The Viking raids began in 793 AD with a raid on Lindisfarne. The Viking Age ended during the 9th and 10th centuries. There are authors who place the date ending the age at 1066, but calling the French speaking Normans who invaded England Vikings because their ancestors were Vikings a hundred years earlier might be stretching a point a bit too much. There is a link to an article on the Viking Age below.
