In memory of the birth day of President Abraham Lincoln, on February 7, 1954; President Dwight Eisenhower, sat in the Lincoln pew, at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, where President Lincoln had attended services.

The sermon by the church's pastor, Dr. George MacPherson Docherty; was based on the Gettysburg Address titled "A New Birth of Freedom." Citing Lincoln's words "under God" as defining words, that set the United States apart. Stating without the words "under God", our pledge could be about any nation.

President Eisenhower was impressed and on February 8, 1954, Rep. Charles Oakman, introduced a bill to congress to enact the change. Congress passed the necessary legislation and PresidentEisenhower signed the bill into law, appropriately, on Flag Day - June 14, 1954.
It was added in the Cold War to show that America was with 'God', unlike America's Atheist (Communist) enemies.
"Under God" was added in the 1950s, early in the Cold War, when fear of Communism was at a peak. Adding this expression was a way to clearly distinguish America from the U.S.S.R., which was militantly atheistic.
President Eisenhower signed the Act that had these words added to the pledge.

"Under God" was added to the Pledge of Allegience, not to the Constitution. The original pledge did not contain that phrase. It was added during Eisenhower's presidency in 1954.

Does your child legally have to say the pledge?

I assume you are referring to the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools. The answer is no. It is federal law, under the First Amendment's free speech clause, that children may not be required to recite the Pledge. Children who don't want to do it, for whatever reason, can stand or sit respectfully while the others recite the Pledge. Schools are prohibited from forcing children to recite the pledge, and schools are prohibited from punishing those students for refusing to recite the pledge. However, any students who harass those who don't say the Pledge are subject to discipline or even expulsion.

Pledge of Allegiance words?

I pledge Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all. I pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and Justice for all. It's not "I pledge of allegiance" but "I pledge allegiance." Also, there are only four words that are proper nouns. A better rendering: I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America; and to the republic, for which it stands; one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Is Pledge of allegiance back in school?

Yes, the pledge of allegiance is still in schools. In a lot of schools across America, children and young adults are saying the pledge of allegiance. Some are not allowing the phrase "under God" in the pledge, for not everyone believes in God, and it is only respectful.
