Well, Ypres was attacked because it was a very strategic place during World War 1. Ypres is located on a hilly area, therefore on the high ground. Also, all roads in Flanders converged on Ypres. Ypres was also in the way of the "Race to the Sea", where the Germans (The main power in Ypres, Turkey and Austria-Hungary were too south) wanted to obtain the ports to cut off the British supplies. Source- I am thirteen and have done a huge project on Ypres.
