The wolverine is not extinct. It has a wide range across the northern hemisphere, and is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN.
The wolverine because way back when Michigan was founded, the man whom established Michigan, was attacked and killed by a wolverine. that's why U of M chose the wolverine to be their mascot.

Michigan got its nickname, "The Wolverine State" in 1835. There was a dispute with Ohio over the Toledo strip and the people of Michigan were said to have been as "bloodthirsty and vicious as wolverines."

Technically Michigan has never had a mascot. Fielding Yost tried live mascots Biff and Bennie but they were too vicious. Then a group tried Willy the Wolverine but there was mixed reviews.
