American black bears give birth while in winter dens near the beginning of the year, late January or early February. Cubs have high mortality, but if the cubs survive, they will stay with their mother for a year and a half, until June or July of their second summer. Because of this, female bears usually give birth only every other year.
Grizzly Bears mate in the fall. The female will delay the development of the cub or cubs until she has met the correct criteria (caloric intake, nutrient availability, etc.). If implantation occurs, then the cubs will develop during hibernation and the have the babies in the spring. The mother bear will care for her offspring for up to two years, not mating for that time. The cycle continues until she is no longer fertile, or unable to care for the cubs.
