The fish must be small enough to be eaten by the knife. There are also small shrimp (ghost shrimp) which some small knifes will find easier to catch than the faster guppies. As the Knife grows so will it's prey.

I would be very carefull what I put with a Black Ghost Knife Fish. If a fish is small enough to fit in its mouth them it will be eaten. Bettas are a nice little morsel for them. I guess fully grown Angels, Discus, Plecostomus etc would be OK. Don't forget some of these knife fish can get BIG around 24 inches. That means a big tank and a big mouth to feed.
