For nouns ending in -ypreceded by a vowel, an -s is added to the end of the word:
For nouns ending in -ypreceded by a consonant, change the -y to -ies:
Just s, es, if there is y then remove Y and add ies after it
This is because of the letters that precede 'Y'. When the 'Y' follows a consonant, the 'Y' must be replaced with 'I' and "ES" is added. When the 'Y' follows a vowel, only an 'S' is needed.
You don't drop the 'y' you just add 's' to make the plural monkeys.
Not unless you are talking about something that "belongs" to the acronym. To make a word plural, just add s, or in some cases drop the y and add es. But to make acronym plural, just add s.
In nouns that end with a consonant and Y, the final Y is dropped and the letters ies are added to make the word plural. In words that end with a vowel and Y, the final Y is retained and an S is added, unless that final vowel is a U.
The spelling rule is: when the word has a vowel (a, e, i, o, u) before the letter ‘y’, you add the letter ‘s’ and when the word has a consonant (b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, z) before the letter ‘y’, you remove the ‘y’ and replace it with ‘ies’.
Sometimes it sounds hard without -y or -ly
If the word has a consonant before the final y, then drop the y and add 'ies' to form the plural. For example:baby > babiesspy > spiesbully > bulliespony> poniesberry > berriesbunny > bunniesIf the word has a vowel before the final y, just add 's' to form the plural. For example:boy > boyskey > keysmonkey > monkeysday > daystoy > toystray > traysTo form the plural of a name (proper noun), add 's' to the end of the word no matter what the preceding letter is. For example:Kennedy > KennedysMary > MarysHenry > HenrysFoley > Foleys
just delete the d and add s
If the y is immediately preceded by a consonant, change y to ies. If the y is preceded by a vowel, simply add s after the y, as with most other words.
strayed - if the word ends in vowel + y then just add -ed.If the word ends in consonant + y then the y changes to i then add -edmarry -- married
The general rules for forming plurals of nouns that end in 'y' are:If the word has a consonant before the final y, then drop the y and add 'ies' to form the plural. For example:baby > babiesspy > spiesbully > bulliespony> poniesberry > berriesbunny > bunniesIf the word has a vowel before the final y, just add 's' to form the plural. For example: boy > boyskey > keysmonkey > monkeysday > daystoy > toystray > traysTo form the plural of a name, add 's' to the end of the word. For example: Kennedy > KennedysMary > MarysHenry > HenrysFoley > Foleys
