For nouns ending in -ypreceded by a vowel, an -s is added to the end of the word:

  • boy, boys
  • day, days
  • joy, joys
  • play, plays
  • turkey, turkeys
  • valley, valleys

For nouns ending in -ypreceded by a consonant, change the -y to -ies:

  • baby, babies
  • daisy, daisies
  • lady, ladies
  • puppy, puppies
  • spy, spies
  • story, stories

Just s, es, if there is y then remove Y and add ies after it

Why do you just add an' s' to monkey to get the plural but have to change the 'y' to' i' and add 'es' the cherry or lady?

This is because of the letters that precede 'Y'. When the 'Y' follows a consonant, the 'Y' must be replaced with 'I' and "ES" is added. When the 'Y' follows a vowel, only an 'S' is needed.

Do you drop the the y in monkeys and put a es or ies or and s?

You don't drop the 'y' you just add 's' to make the plural monkeys.

Is using 's after acronym correct?

Not unless you are talking about something that "belongs" to the acronym. To make a word plural, just add s, or in some cases drop the y and add es. But to make acronym plural, just add s.

If a noun ends in y sometimes you change the y to i and add es but sometimes you just add s how do you know which you should do?

In nouns that end with a consonant and Y, the final Y is dropped and the letters ies are added to make the word plural. In words that end with a vowel and Y, the final Y is retained and an S is added, unless that final vowel is a U.

What is the rule for dropping the y and adding -ies?

The spelling rule is: when the word has a vowel (a, e, i, o, u) before the letter ‘y’, you add the letter ‘s’ and when the word has a consonant (b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, z) before the letter ‘y’, you remove the ‘y’ and replace it with ‘ies’.
