Timing belts on a Renault Megane 1.5 diesel should be changed every 72000 miles or every 5 years, whichever comes first.

I believe it has a chain instead of a belt. Call your Renault dealer to make sure.
Timing belts last 60 to 100 thousand miles, and should be changed accordingly. The easiest way to make sure your timing belt is in working order is to bring it to a local mechanic.
I have a similar thing in my 2004 Renault megane it doesnt always happen but sometimes it will shudder if sat in traffic.... I think it is something to do with the timing! but not sure http//www.beaucroft.co.uk
