The best signs of needing a new timing chain on these Jeep (AMC) engines is a rattling noise coming from the front of the engine. Performance will also go down hill, and so will economy (because with less power comes less gas mileage). It's recommended between 100k and 150k miles, but some come with not-so-great chains which want to be replaced at about 80k, and some will last you the engine's whole life (300k+). Just listen for a clattering/rattling noise.
A 2004 Wrangler has an inline six, not a V6. It has a timing chain.
