You should not ever need to replace the timing chain. If you are hearing motor noise it is caused by two problems. First the oil filter, these engines require the use of AC Delco oil filters only, they a extremely sensitive to regulated oil pressure and most aftermarket oil filters are unacceptable. This leads to the second problem which is the timing chain tensioner. The tensioner wears out from poor oiling and must be replaced.
