How do you change the starter on a 1992 deville 4.9L?

It's quite a process that shouldn't be attempted without the factory service manual. Basically, you need to remove the intake manifold to get to the starter. After the intake is off, it's easy to do. But the factory service manual would have all the info you need to safely and correctly remove the intake without damaging any of the delicate fuel injection parts.

How do you change a starter on a 1993 Buick century V6?

replacing the starter is relatively simple, what do is remove the wires from the starter solenoid which is located on top of the starter motor, and mark where the wires came from, there is a small terminal then there is a bigger terminal. oh and un hook the battery before that because it's an unpleastant surprise. then using a jack support the starter before the bolts are removed, then remove the bolts, which in most cases are 15mm, then lower the jack with the starter and put the new one one the jack. raise the jack and hook everything back up. get the starter secured and hook the wires up then the battery and turn it over. jeremy aka ccz5105

How do you change a starter on a 1986 mustang v8?

Hello, If you are talking about the gear on the fly wheel, 1. remove the fly wheel from the back of the motor. 2. Remove any grease and oil. 3. put it into the kitchen oven at 400 deg. for about 20-30 min. 4. Then use pliers to remove or relocate the gear. The gear is made of softer metal than the wheel, so it will exspande at a lower temp and wheel need a higher temp to exspande. The heat from the oven will heat the gear evenly so it can be lifted off with pliers. J.

How do you change a starter for a 2004 Mercury Sable?

Remove both leads to the battery. There are two bolts holding the starter to the transmission. One, the bolt closer to the radiator has a ground on it and has a nut on the bolt fastening the ground lead to the bolt.

After removing the ground a deep socket will be needed to remove the bolt. The rear bolt comes out and you have a starter in your hands.

You have a positive cable attached to the starter and an ignition bypass still attached that must be removed before you can drop the starter.

I have changed brushes in the 3.8 starter and found the starter will go another 100,000 miles. This is a gear reduction starter that should be checked to draw about 80 amps without a load. Some will draw more than 130 amps which is definitely over spec.

The cost of brushes lists for $50 but can be purchased for $15 from a starter rebuilder.

A little grease on the bearing surfaces, and a little polishing of the communtator, and the starter will work well for years.

AnswerHey Russell==Disconnect the battery. Raise the car up and remove the wires from the starter. Then remove the bolts and work it out among the exhaust pipes. GoodluckJoe

---The reason so many look at this topic may be the chilton manual which shows a diagram of the 3.0L starter shrunk down to unreadable. What looks like the top bolt is not connected to the starter at all. The bolt labled "stud" which holds the cable routing bracket has to be removed after the bracket and nut are removed.

Also unless you have an air rachet, no normal length tool can be used to break the top bolt loose without removing the fan and shroud, and the stud that holds cable managment bracket. Also the relays and controllers mounted to the rail above the radiator.

After that the exhaust pipes are not really in the way of removal.

AnswerThat top bolt is a real challenge - I assembled about 2 feet worth of socket driver extensions and fed it to the bolt from straight out and to the far right side. This provided lots of swing-room for the ratchet wrench. The start is located on the lower part of the 'front' of the engine - the side literally facing the front of the vehicle.

It is located below the front exhaust manifold.

The starter is lower front of engine at the transmission close to the radiator.

AnswerBefore removing the starter for repair or replacement, check the condition of all circuit wiring for damage. Inspect all connections to the starter motor, relay, ignition switch, and battery, including all ground connections. Clean and tighten all connections as seen fit.

Also keep in mind that the heavy gague input lead to the starter solenoid is hot at all times. Be careful to ensure the protective cap is installed over the terminal and replaced after service.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Note: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal driveablilty symptoms may occur while the PCM relearns its adaptive strategy. It usually take about 10 miles of driving to relearn it, so take it easy.

2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.

3. Disengage the starter cable and the push-on connector from the starter solenoid.

4. Remove the upper and lower retaining bolts, then remove the starter motor from the vehicle.

5. Position the starter motor to the engine , then install the upper and lower retaining bolts finger tight.

6. Tighten the retaining bolts to 15-20 ft. pounds.

7. Engage the starter solenoid connector, making sure to push straight on until it locks into position, you will hear it click.

8. Install the starter calbe nut to the starter solenoid B terminal. Tighten the nut to 80-120 in. pounds, then install the red starter solenoid safety cap.

9. Lower the vehicle, then connect the negative battery cable.

AnswerDisconnect one battery cable. You can disconnect the positive instead of the negative just for fun if you like, but don't arc out.

Jack up the front of the car (and yadda set it on stands, yadda set parking yadda brake.)

The starter is bolted to the engine near the bottom on the side closer to the radiator. This is a very easy one to get to. You may need 13mm and 15mm sockets, both deep and short as well as wrenches of those sizes to remove it. On some cars a 17mm deep may also be required Be careful not to damage the ground strap on the lower mounting stud. This will be the easiest starter you ever replace unless you're using a Pep Boys guaranteed defective prostart brand unit that you'll replace within a few days.

If your transaxle has been replaced by a dimwit or slacktard, the nut on the lower mounting stud may not be removable in place any you may break the ground strap at that stud. If so, DO NOT forget to repair this ground strap.

Wear high quality thick latex gloves that fit well. Keep a few extra gloves and rags handy. If this is a 3.0L engine (not a 3.8L which has blown it's third head gasket by now) the starter will be covered in nasty partially burned oil because every time the filter is removed it drains onto the starter. Keep a few spare gloves handy.

AnswerLook for your oil filter. The starter should be just by where the filter is mounted.I'm looking at a close up picture so I have no idea where this is.

- Disconnect the large cable from the terminal on the starter moter.- Remove the 2 bolts attaching the rear support bracket to remove bracket.- Remove the 2 bolts connecting the starter to the bellhousing. There should be a ground wire attached to the upper bolt.- transmission type: - automatic - remove starter between the radiator and subframe. - manual - remove starter between the subframe and engine.

Answerwhile your answer was good, may i suggest that folks always disconnect the battery first. This is always a good practice to follow anyway in order to prevent an aciccident or blown computer. AnswerStarter id almost dead center (from side to side) just benind the radiator, in the hardest possible location to reach, and it is right next to the oil filter. Ford was kind enough to leave no way to easily remove it, much less install a replacement. Be prepared to remove the fan, etc., and bring lights, extensions, floppy sockets, mirors, or a small child. Good luck.

How do you change the starter on a 1999 Malibu?

Well, .. for a 1994 Lumina APV - here's what I did: I replaced the starter in my 1994 Lumina APV (3.8 L V6) after about 120,000 miles. Symptom was that the starter would turn over very slowly when the engine was hot. Nice gentleman @ Autozone told me that the coils tend to deteriorate and heat conducted from the engine causes the starter to heat up and then draw high current when hot. Cold starts were fine - hot starts caused the starter to turn very slowly (like the battery was drained). He tested the starter and it tripped the breaker on the tester two (2) times.

Got a remanufactured one for ~$65.

Here's what I did.

1) Disconnect cable from negative battery terminal

2) Raise vehicle front and suitably and safely support.

3) Remove cover from starter wiring (small right angle-like black plastic cover).

3) Loosen large wiring harness (underneath starter) so that it can be moved out of the way.

4) Remove outer nut and wires from solenoid.

5) Remove outer nut and wires wires from starter.

6) Remove two (2) screws retaining plastic flywheel cover and cover. You will need to do this - otherwise you will be unable to remove the front bolt holding the starter to the engine block. This cover is a small black plstic piece located where starter penertates the flywheel cover.

7) Remove (2) bolts retaining starter to the engine block. One is accessable towards the front of the starter/vehicile and the other (long one) is towards the rear of the vehicle - just behind the frame cross member.

8) Position starter so that if can be dropped down (flywheel gear part first).

9) Reverse the above instructions to install the new starter/solenoid.

Just changed the starter in my daughter's '97 Aspire, two days ago. It'll help if you go buy the replacement starter prior to removing the old one. It cost me a little over $100 with a $30 core charge.

First remove the battery. You'll then need a 8mm, 12mm, and 14mm socket.

Remove the two 8mm nuts holding the starter to the bracket.

Remove the two 12mm bolts holding the bracket to the frame. Once their out, you'll have to clear the studs on the starter and pull the bracket out.

Remove the two 14mm bolts that hold the starter to the block(look at replacement starter for position).

Once these two bolts are out, undo the electrical connection (two wires) and the starter will come right out.

Reverse the process for installation.

It took me about 45 minutes to complete.

Because it's pushing more of a load in the front, making it give more gas to the engine.

How do you change the starter on 1999 CRV?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You can change it from the top (unlike a chevy). You first have to remove the air cleaner cover. Then the whole air delivery system (the black plastic parts). To do this you loosen the worm clamp which holds the air system to the intake manifold, pull it off the manifold, and take the little hose off (in that area) also. Then you have to remove a bolt behind the air cleaner box. The air box is held down in the front by a plastic plug. You may really have to tug on that front connection to get it off. Once you pull that mess out, you can see the starter to remove it. Make sure that you disconnect the + terminal from the battery before disconnecting the starter wiring. The connector on the bottom left of the starter can be a buggar to pull off, too -- just wiggle & groan a little. You should be able to figure it out, now that you can see the bolts which hold it on.

Note:It may be necessary to remove the exhaust pipe(s) or frame crossmember to gain access to the starter. In extreme cases it may be necessary to unbolt the mounts and raise the engine slightly to get starter out

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable. If the vehicle is equipped with a delco loc 2 or theftlock audio system make sure to have the activation code before disconnecting the battery.
  • Raise the front of the car and support it securely on jackstands.Apply the parking brake and block the rear wheels.
  • On 2.2L engines with manual transaxle remove the brace between the engine and the transaxle. On 2.3L and 2.4L OHC engines remove the air intake ducts to gain access to the top starter motor bolt locatedon the transaxle
  • Remove the mounting bolts and detach the starter.Note the location of the spacer shims they must be reinstalled in the same position (if used)
  • Working under the car clearly label then disconnect the wires from the terminals on the starter motor and solenoid

How do you change the starter on a 1986 Nissan 300zx?

Asked by Wiki User

  • Unhook the negative battery terminal.
  • Lift the car.
  • Slide under the car.
  • Remove the brace that holds the intake manifold. See photo.
  • Remove the oil filter. Have a small cup ready to capture 1 ounce of oil.
  • Unscrew the solenoid power supply from the post. Use pliers.
  • Unplug the harness from the solenoid socket that comes from the battery. Use a screw driver.
  • Unscrew the bolt #1 from the bottom of the engine that holds the starter. You will need a 6 inch or longer swivel angle joint. See photo.
  • From the top of the engine, unscrew the ground wire bolt that runs from the battery to engine housing. It is also the bolt #2 that attaches the starter to the engine housing. You will need a socket extension. See photo.
  • The starter comes off.
  • Installation is the reverse of the removal process.

How do you change the starter on a 93 Topaz?

Asked by Wiki User

The starter motor is located under the car. There is three bolts holding it to the side of the transmission. There is also a bracet being held on by the bolt which is connected to the E.G.R. tubes. Just undo the the three nuts and pull the E.G.R. bracet off then undo the power line to the starter and you should have the starter in your hands. Before you do anything though disconnect the + batterie terrminal.

Where is the blower motor resistor on a 2004 Colorado?

User Avatar

Asked by Psmith1948

The blower fan resistor is located in the foot well of the passenger seat (under the glove box). Remove the two screws and pull the resistor down and out. Unplug the resistor and look at the metal contact points. If they are burnt out you might have to replace the plug and resistor. Replacing the plug requires light electrical work involving crimping/splicing wires.

How do you change the starter on a 1997 izuzu trooper?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

AnswerI have a 1996 limited trooper and it doesn't look like you can change it without removing the exhaust manifold....I had it unbolted and couldn't find a path to remove it.....someone please help if you can answer....Thanks Answer Remove 4 bolts on front crossmember, remove it and starter is a r/r job redisuzutoo. You do have to take off the exhaust at the exhaust manifold. You also have to unbolt the Y pipe so that it is able to move slightly towards the back of the wheel well. Anyways after that the starter slides right out. My problem is after I pulled my starter out, a hose fell off and it runs to the drivers side door. Into a canister. I don't think its the fuel pump, but I don't know what it is. And I can't find out where it goes under the car. Its a hose that when you are looking at the starter from the bottom it sits under the starter, next to the bundle of wires that is under the starter. If someone could look at their trooper and see where this hose goes. It attatches to a metal tube and I can't see where it ends above the oil pan nor can I feel. Or if someone could direct me to a diagram for this side of the car that would be appreciated.

Nate

AnswerYou do not need to unbolt the exhaust. I did this repair a couple of months ago on 1996 Trooper S.

0. Call around and check prices; they varied considerably in my area. You should be able to find a remanufactured starter w/ warranty <$150.00.

1. Jack up front of car and safely support on stands; you'll need the elbow room.

2. Disconnect negative wire from battery.

3. Remove heat shield beneath starter (2 or 3 small bolts)(Starter is on Driver's side, wire terminals are on the front)

4. Disconnect wire terminals at front of starter.

5. Remove 2 bolts holding starter to engine block. They are hard to see; you'll need a decent light. They are in a line, perpendicular to the length of the vehicle at the back of the starter. You'll need an extention or two for your socket, and a universal swivel is helpful.

6. Rotate starter 180 degrees so that wire terminals face rear of vehicle. There is just enough room to get it out. You may need to loosen one bracket on the heatshield on the exhaust pipe where you are removing the starter and rotate it out of the way.

7. Reverse the process to install; goes in easier than it comes out.

8. Took me about 1.5 hours, but I didn't have directions.

***********************************************************

There is an easier way. It is very tight to get it out that way. if you want to have the job done in half that time all you have to do is unbolt the drivers side of the front end. there are 2 bolts that go strait up. once removed it will drop the front end about 1-2 inches and the starter will come right out.
