That depends on exactly what you mean. (USAF?)
For Air Force, most likely you'll not put on SSgt before 4 years depending on your promotion test scores. If and when you do make it, you'll be assigned a "line number". Which stacks everyone up according to how long they've been in the current rank before promotion. So if you make it your first time most likely it will be about a year after you test for you to actually put on the new rank.
Also, in the month that your promotion "line number" comes up, you put on the new rank on the first day of the month in which you're being promoted.
When you pass the test for staff sergeant you will be given a line number. Based on how big or how small the number is when you will sew on for staff.
Staff Sergeant/SSG
You get staff sergeant I but after staff sergeant II and III you get staff sergeant first class. hope this helped ;)

Color Sergeants (or Colour Sergeants in the British Army or Canadian Forces) were usually equivalent or slightly higher in rank to Staff Sergeants, depending on the country in which they served. The title is now ceremonial in most military organizations.
Staff Sergeant
A Staff Sergeant is a noncommissioned officer, whereas a Captain is a commissioned officer.
The '3' indicates skill level 3, which would be the rank of Staff Sergeant. A Staff Sergeant would be a squad leader, or a Staff Sergeant with seniority or who is close to promotion to Sergeant First Class might fill the role of Platoon Sergeant. They might also work as a staff NCO in a battalion/brigade/division/etc. shop, which wouldn't be a leadership position.
